Flickr The Stratasys uPrint is an expensive 3D printer, costing tens of thousands of dollars. Low-end consumer-level 3D printers are now often priced below a thousand dollars. However, a third option is to use a print service such as 3D Hubs, ShapewaysSculpteoPonokoiMaterialise - then no printer is needed at all.

The starting frame of the animation itself, a diamond, results in an object with a diamond at top and bottom. To enable seeing more of the model's form the animation was given a 30% shift in its starting point for this 3D print. Contrast this with the July22b2014 model, which begins and ends with a diamond, enclosing a space.

Once this 3D model was printed, a mismatch was noticed between GIF and 3D print: the handedness did not match. Eric's conversion program had a bug that flipped the model from left to right. This is an easy mistake to make in computer graphics, when moving from one frame of reference to another. Rather than print the model again, Andrew simply remade the animation, changing the directions of the rotations.

This model is available for sale (at no profit) and free download on the Shapeways site.
