At this point the original animation is still recognizable within the 3D printed form. Would this 3D model constitute a separate piece of intellectual property? It is derived from another work, but is also quite different. Legal issues involved with 3D printing and the ownership and transformation of digital and physical objects will come to the fore in the coming years.
The free program PhotoScape was used to take the series of photos and make an animated GIF.
These stills were taken with an older camera. On Andrew's advice, Eric switched to the iPhone 6's camera for the animated sequence. While the iPhone camera has better focus, the blue background faded to white - see the animation again for comparison. As the exposure and color correction algorithms on cameras become more complex, the old philosophical conundrum of "do you see what I see?" then extends further into our devices.
